With Hit & Miss premiering on DirecTV tonight(!), the first U.S. reviews of the show have started to surface online — and, much like in the UK earlier this spring, they are nearly uniformly positive. Check out what the U.S. critics have had to say of Chloë’s performance so far:
“I realize this plot sounds laughably bizarre, but Hit & Miss has a strikingly strong sense of pace and character. Sevigny, who played the craziest wife in HBO’s polygamy epic, Big Love, has found a nearly perfect part here as Mia becomes a thoroughly engaging and deeply conflicted character. The role is written (by Sean Conway) with a surprising sensitivity that is heads above the cheap ‘tranny’ jokes we usually get from a popular culture that fails again and again to discern cross-dressing antics from gender-identity issues.”
- NOLA.com
“But what makes Hit & Miss unique isn’t the prosthetic penis. It’s its confident, measured tone and pace. In a summer sea of frantic entertainment, the series is atmospheric and downright thoughtful. At the center of it is Sevigny, accomplishing the feat of portraying a taciturn, transgender assassin figuring out how to navigate her relationship with an entire new family. And she does it all — the lady who used to be a bloke subtext, the squabbling, the killing — with an effortless accent. It’s the kind of complicated, challenging role any actress would dream of, but few would have the courage to pull off. Yet Sevigny does it with grit and nuance, creating one of her most indelible roles yet.”
- Salon.com
“The actors, starting with Sevigny, repeatedly turn that specter into raw, compelling drama. Think Shameless without the jokes and The Crying Game without the glamour. A lot of viewers may say, ‘I can’t watch this.’ It will reward those who do.”
- NY Daily News

Fretts on Film recently caught up with Chloë Sevigny to talk about some of her most recent films. Here’s some more information on Chloë’s involvement in the upcoming Linda Lovelace biopic Lovelace, M. Blash’s The Wait, which has been “in post-production” since August 2011, and James Franco’s NYU student film Black Dog, Red Dog, straight from the source. Kicking things off with…
… Lovelace, in which Chloë appears opposite her Big Love co-star Amanda Seyfried, who plays the title role:
“I’m probably in a minute and a half of the movie,” Sevigny told me. “It’s a cameo. It’s at the very beginning of the movie, and I play a feminist journalist interviewing her about the provocative nature of her work. I love Amanda, and they have a lot of great people doing cameos.”
The Wait:
“The Wait is still pending distribution,” Sevigny says. “It’s a great movie. I love it. I hope somebody picks it up. But I loved his last movie [Lying from 2006, in which Chloë also appears], too. They’re not for everyone.”
And finally, Black Dog, Red Dog:
“It’s not a film. It’s a student film. I do student films now,” she says, with a laugh. “I live in New York, and I want to give back to the community a little bit.”
Will it get a theatrical release, like Franco’s master’s thesis, the Hart Crane biopic The Broken Tower? “God, I have no idea. I doubt it. Maybe. I have no idea what they do with these films,” says Sevigny, who plays one of the main characters’ girlfriends. “If [Broken Tower] got released with barely a blip, then I don’t have much hope for Red Dog, Black Dog or Black Dog, Red Dog.”

With Hit & Miss‘ Tuesday TV debut, several newspapers and -blogs have put up their reviews of the show. Fortunately, the reception for the show has been very positive overall, and Chloë Sevigny has been particularly (and deservedly) commended for her portrayal of Mia.
Below is excerpted what critics have had to say of Chloë’s performance so far:
From the second the show opens, Hit and Miss sets itself apart from other television programmes by completely embracing the stark reality of its subject matter. Mia, played pitch perfectly by Chloe Sevigny, is far from the elaborate charisma of Beatrix Kiddo from Kill Bill as one might expect and neither does she embody the panache of a graceful warrior assassin like in House of Flying Daggers. [...] The character is given real depth and complexity making her so engrossing you can hardly wait for her to come on screen again. Sevigny’s elegant yet brassy portrayal which really is the heart and soul of this production.
- So So Gay
“Sevigny is excellent in the lead role, neither her Irish accent nor her vulnerable intensity wavering for a moment.”
- CultBox
“In fact, [Hit & Miss is] compelling and, after a while, credible. [...] And it’s partly down to Sevigny’s performance. Her heavy-lidded cool, hitherto deployed in a clutch of American independent films (The Last Days of Disco, American Psycho, Trees Lounge), brilliantly conveys the turmoil with which Mia must contend as she faces up to her new life.”
- Radio Times

Crime Time Preview has posted the first review of the debut episode of Sky Atlantic’s upcoming miniseries Hit & Miss starring Chloë Sevigny — and it’s a positive one! The review reveals no spoilers, speaking only generally of the premise of the show and its premier episode, so do check out the full write-up on Crime Time Preview.
Excerpt from the review about Chloë’s performance:
Chloë Sevigny has a feminine gawkiness that convinces as a man becoming a woman, and a woman who can stick up for herself. The actress portrays the confidence and aggression to realistically deal with her barroom bully.
The series is not perfect, and Chloë Sevigny’s accent veers alarmingly between American and Irish, with the latter seeming to be her intended nationality. But it is good to see a crime series that explores characters that are dramatically rich and compelling. Granted, transsexual hitmen/women are rare, but the dynamic between the children, Mia and their outside tormentors is the focus, and it gives the drama heart.
Interestingly, the article also says the series will start June on Sky Atlantic (as opposed to the previously advertised May), but this is likely more an estimate than an exact release “date” so we should rather probably expect a late May/early June kickoff. Two terrific new hi-res promotional stills of Chloë as Mia on the show have also been uploaded to our gallery.
Thanks once again to our friends at Jonas Armstrong Blog for another terrific find! :)
