“But we really need to talk about me now!”
- Nicolette “Nicki” Grant

As always, hopefully everyone was able to tune in to last Sunday’s episode of HBO’s critically acclaimed polygamist drama series, Big Love, on which Chloë Sevigny stars as Bill Henrickson’s second wife Nicolette “Nicki” Grant opposite Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Ginnifer Goodwin. Here’s our recap of episode 3.09 “Outer Darkness”, please highlight to read:

Unwelcome in the Henrickson household, Nicki stays in the Big House on the compound with her brother Alby, where the two plot against their parents. Bill worries losing Nicki will result in him losing the rest of his family, and feels he has let down his wives. While at Alby’s, Nicki crosses paths with her first husband, JJ, and is less than pleased to see him. When he offers her the possibility to see their daughter, she quietly turns her back on him. Back home, Sarah’s ex-boyfriend Scott, having heard of Sarah’s miscarriage, suddenly shows up at the Henricksons’ doorstep, where Ben punches him in the face while Bill tells him off. Scott and Sarah, however, reconcile intimately, only to be interrupted by an abhorred, if sympathetic, Nicki. When Barb’s polygamist lifestyle is outed to her congregation by her own sister Cindy, Barb realizes she could face excommunication and experiences as crisis of faith. Budging under pressure from Margie, Bill asks Nicki to come back home, only to announce during a one-on-one dinner he wants to be unsealed from Nicki, much to Nicki’s surprise and anger. As the two return home, they find Barb in an uproar, as Cindy inadvertently confessed to Barb what she’d done during a sacred Mormon ceremony. However, Barb’s animosity towards her sister is quickly transformed into empathy, when Cindy and Ted’s daughter is abducted by the infamous Greenes, exceedingly keen on obtaining the much-discussed letter legitimizing polygamy within the church. To aid his brother-in-law, Bill aims to use Roman’s influence on the Greenes to get the child back in exchange for Bill negotiating with District Attorney Ray Henry a recommendation of lift of probation for Roman. Ray reluctantly agrees, but at the same time tells Bill there’s an ongoing investigation regarding his and Nicki’s involvement in Roman’s trial. Alby deliberately reveals to Bill’s brother Joey, still devastated by the death of his bride-to-be Kathy Marquart, details about Roman’s involvement in Kathy death. When Joey finds out about Bill’s deal with Roman, he denounces his brother. Following a hearing, Barb, fearful of ending up in the “outer darkness” in death, is to her great grief excommunicated as a result of her unwillingness to let go of her lifestyle.

Wowee! I don’t know about you, but I’m personally really digging where they’re going with Nicki this season, and Chloë never ceases to amaze me with her portrayal of Nicki’s quirky mannerisms. I wonder what part, if any, Nicki’s first husband will play in the upcoming season finale. By the way, has anyone else noticed the brilliance of the series score? Beautiful. Check out our 474 medium-res screen captures of Chloë performance at our gallery, or alternatively our 9 site-exclusive video clips at our media archive. Can’t wait for next Sunday’s season finale, 3.10 “Sacrament”! As always, we’ll do our best to cover it.
