“Oh, for pete’s sake. They were petting rats. Rats!”
- Nicolette “Nicki” Grant
As promised, here’s our second Big Love recap of the episodes we’ve missed pre-revamp, this one of episode 3.06 “Come, Ye Saints”, which aired Sunday, February 22 2009. As always, please highlight to read:
In order to strengthen the family unity and with Ana still on their mind, Bill takes his three wives and their children out on a road trip “into the heart of Mormondom” to bury a family time capsule, aimed at future generations. However the trip goes far from what Bill had planned. Nicki finds out Bill is taking Viagra because of her apparent “infertility”, while Barb finds Nicki’s birth control pills and Nicki is forced to admit she’s been on them for four years, much to the surprise and resentment of the entire family, not the least Bill himself. A depressed Sarah, not in the least keen on the trip, decides to keep her baby when she unexpectedly loses it at night, and Nicki encourages Sarah to tell her parents, which she does. Ben and Margie catch one another naked, and Ben becomes increasingly infatuated with her, much to the dismay of Margie. Margie, Barb and Nicki then make a 300-mile detour to visit relatives of Margie’s mother Ginger, where Margie plans to leave Ginger’s remains, but the ashes eventually end up scattered all over the road when Margie forgets the urn on the car roof. Bill then, at Margie’s request, has Ginger baptized through Barb. Nicki becomes increasingly frustrated with what she considers Margie’s “flimsy” behavior. At the end of an exhausting trip, with everyone torn, vexed and tired, Bill finds himself questioning his faith, feeling God has forsaken him and his family.
Personally, “Come, Ye Saints” has been my favorite Season 3 episode yet! Thoroughly entertaining, and Chloë Sevigny was again excellent as Nicki; I really cracked up during the scene with the visit to Margie’s relatives. Priceless! Check out our 651 medium-res screen captures of her performance at our gallery, or alternatively our 9 site-exclusive video clips at our media archive. Coming up, a recap of the latest episode, 3.07 “Fight or Flight”!
